This book has great material if you’re interested in black & white, and it has some good things to offer even for people who want to work in color. The book starts off on the wrong foot, but then it becomes very useful beginning in Chapter 3.

It’s clearly written, comprehensive and includes useful detail.Chapter 1 is a portfolio of the author’s work. Chapter 2 is about his multi-computer setup and all the hard drives he has in RAID arrays, etc.

Swell, but tell us what the practical needs are for amateurs and beginning pro’s, please. After looking at his portfolio and reading his gloat you’re wondering whether this book is just an ego trip for Mr.

Diallo. But in Chapter 3 he reviews color management and gets into the details about device profiles. If you’re reading about digital B&W you’ve probably already read about color management, but this book explains it better than anything else I’ve read.

Chapter 4 gets into examples of conversions from digital color to B&W. There’s good info on scanning and scanning software, which is an unexpected bonus if you have a collection of negatives from your pre-digital life.

Chapter 5 covers the use of Photoshop for B&W. It summarizes the main tools photographers should learn and incluuds some examples of how to use them, and that chapter is as useful for color as it is for B&W.

Chapter 6 goes into the details on B&W printing, including the use for third part ink sets for Epson printers and the use of raster imaging processors (RIPs). Again, the text is clearly written even as it goes into detail.

Chapter 7 covers digital workflow and includes a couple of useful end-to-end examples. There’s an excellent discussion of why and how to use sharpening. Chapters 8 and 9 will be of interest to people interesting in selling their work.

Chapter 8 on limited editions could be condensed to about 5 pages by removing redundant text, but it does contain clear and presumably useful advice. Chapter 9 on building a portfolio is detailed and includes a short section on building a web site for displaying one’s portfolio.

The advice is certainly useful for someone hoping to sell his or her work as fine art. There’s a good reference guide at the back with links to various sources of ink, paper, software, etc. There are two flaws that should be corrected in a future update/new edition: The most serious flaw is that the illustrations in the book are small and sometimes rather dark, so it’s hard to verify the points Mr.

Diallo makes in the text. He even ackmowledges their shortcomings in thhe text. The publisher could learn a lot from looking at the excellent quality of the illustrations printed in books on photography published by Rocky Nook.

Mr. Diallo posts full sized versions of the photos for download from the book’s website, but each one has to be downloaded one at a time. That’s really a kludge. In a book about photography, the photos should be printed well enough so that the reader can see what Mr.

Diallo is writing about! And his examples should be on a CD included with the book so the reader can apply the lessons, especially the lessons in Chapter 5 about using Photoshop for Black & White. The inadequately printed illustrations means 4 stars, not 5.

(A minor quibble: The text about a photo is often on the page before the photo itself. But that’s a small matter compared to the poorly reproduced photos themselves.)The second flaw is inevitable. The book was published at the end of 2007 and it covers both software and hardware (printers, scanners, spectrophotometers) very well.

That information is getting out of date as of the end of 2009. For example the author describes how to use Photoshop CS3, but the current version is CS4; the Epson 2400 has been replaced by the 2880 and the 3800 by the 3880.

It’s not a problem for the next year or so (through 2010), but eventually the product-specific information will get stale. Hopefully there will be a new edition — maybe even one with well-reproduced illustrations and a CD.

Still, the techniques the author describes won’t get stale, so if you’re interested in digital B&W, this is a very good choice.

The Headshot: The Secrets to Creating Amazing Headshot Portraits (Voices That Matter)

This book does live up to its title in my opinion. The illustrations are very well organized with the text, moving from simple to more complex.Read more

5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent Book – Comprehensive, and Easy to Follow

5.0 out of 5 starsNot at all just for Digital Black and White

I have purchased many of Michael Freeman’s books. This one meets all of the excellent standards that I like and respect about his writings. I particularly found his comparisons with color imaging and silver based photography stimulating.

The only criticism I have is the poor proof reading. There are many misspelled words, words left out, etc. As a result reading the book can be a bit tedious. This was not the case with the authors other books.

Photo Design: Picture Composition for Black and White Photography

Good photography transcends whether the image was captured in full color or black-and-white, and Amadou Diallo recognizes that fact in presenting this excellent guidebook for imaging in monochrome. Virtually everything in this book has applications in color photography as well, whether it’s the description of proper calibration to the invaluable tips on tonality.

If you aspire to be a better photographer, this book is a good place to start. You’ll find that after you’ve mastered black-and-white image capture and output, you’ll be well on the road to mastery of all aspects of good photography.

Recommended.

This book is almost square, a fine format for displaying the well chosen images. It says “Black & White” but it also says “Complete Guide”, and that’s so true. Here you find a very methodic approach to this subject.

Starting with simple straight forward color to B&W conversion and showing clearly that the simple way is quick and so dirty, Michael soon leads us into the world of creatively making what we want and how to tweak the image to get that result.

Michael shows us (using Photoshop as main tool) step by step how to tackle the issues, from the color image itself via the conversion (tools) to processing the converted result. Other conversions (like duotones, InfraRed, solarization) are very well explained, in completely worked out examples.

Likeable is that he really shows the different possiblities, sometimes to show that some ways are not producing top quality work, sometimes to show the choices, creative decisions you have to make for yourself.

Plug-ins and other specialistic tools (for making digital look like film, for noise-reduction etc.) are nicely introduced, showing where, if and when they are needed. The images are beautiful and to the point.

The examples show that seeing in color is so different from seeing in B&W. Michael makes us aware of thinking beforehand in B&W, shown also in work made by the masters (Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and more).

The Zone system is not left untouched in this book. If you think: B&W? Easy: desaturate, done. Then think again, from what you see here, you know this conversion can be done so much better. The displaying, mounting, presenting of the work are also covered.

This really is a complete guide! When you pick this up you have a very attractive book in your hands. Written for easy reference, no lengthy chapters, but concise and direct 2, 3 pages on each subject.

And believe me, you want to pick up this book, time and time again, to become a master yourself, at least in the processing and finishing department.

Easy-to-use, step-by-step instructions on when to buy, sell U.S. ETF’s and outperform the stock market overtime, a must read for beginners!

Lovely Cats – A Grayscale Coloring Book that Opens the Door for Creative Expression (The Lovely Series) (Volume 2)

This volume fits with Michael Freeman’s other books in these respects: Its the same size, Mr. Freeman’s writing is accessible and clear, There is plenty of good information and how-to-do-it examples. I have read two other books by Mr.

Freeman and like them very much. The bad is the production of the book. There are obvious and easy to catch misspellings. Sentences that make no sense. Sentences that aren’t. On one page two of the example graphics are incorrectly labelled (the labels were switched and the examples and descriptions were opposites).

All this carried on throughout (I had hoped the situation would improve as the book went on – it didn’t). On the first page of each section there are several lines of boldface type. I thought it would be a very brief overview or a short pertinent quote from the text.

No, although it is located halfway down the page, it is the beginning of the text. You must read it first.I’m glad Mr. Freeman’s newer book(s) are from Focal Press, they seem to have a much better grasp on putting together a quality product.

5.0 out of 5 starscomplete Guide to Black and White DIGITAL Photography

The very nature of black and white photography places a premium on creative interpretation of the image. Advances in digital technology have expanded both the precision of imaging techniques and the interpretive possibilities for black and white imagery.

Never before has such a wide array of tools been available to photographers who have a passion for black and white. “Mastering Digital Black and White” is written for these photographers. It serves not only as a comprehensive guide for creating black and white images and prints, but also examines the role of artistic craft in the imaging process.

Learn how to employ your digital tools as extensions of your photographic vision. Read in-depth interviews with, and view images from, five accomplished photographers as they discuss their process and inspirations.

Prepare to indulge your passion for gallery-quality black-and-white images in the digital darkroom. Additional supporting content for this book and a discussion forum for photographers and printmakers with a passion for black and white can be accessed at the book’s website.

I’ve been shooting B&W for almost 60 years, but I appreciated the author’s revisiting of the medium’s history, and the philosophy that kept many of us shooting B&W long after good color films were commonplace.

As a general introduction to B&W photography, this is an excellent book. Most of the technical information is slated toward Photoshop CS4, I think, as that’s the latest version mentioned in this 2011-publication book.

A handful of good alternative software packages are mentioned, but not covered in great detail. There have been comments here about the author’s understanding of Photoshop tools, but there are many ways to convert a color image to monochrome.

Ultimately, it’s the photographer’s eye, coupled with a willingness to spend time learning what all the menu options do, that will produce good results. Good photography is hard work. Pressing the shutter release is easy; what you do before and after are what matter.

This “Complete Guide” covers all the facets of digital B&W photography, and on opening the book one is immediately impressed by the design. Echoing others’ complaints, where it falls down is in proof-reading! I will think twice before buying another Lark Press book for this reason alone.

Yes, the images are helpful and, even with the typos, the text is informative. But the typos and either flipped illustrations or erroneous captions become intrusive in a hurry. Given the production costs and the costs of licensing Ansel Adams’ and others’ photos, a few hundred extra bucks for a proof reader doesn’t seem out of line.

Still, if you’re interested in exploring black-and-white digital photography and you have a DSLR and Photoshop CS4 or later, you’ll find a great deal of helpful information and inspiration in this book.

Advanced Black-and-White Photography (Kodak Workshop Series)

Warning: This book is NOT for you if your primary interest is truly that of “mastering” digital black and white photography and printing.Any time a book title includes the words “mastering” or “ultimate” my smell-o-rama sensor automatically activates.

Such sweeping and arrogant suggestions are always over-cooked. “Mastering Digital Black and White” is no exception. The book is nicely printed and features very good color illustrations, making many of Diallo’s image processing points easy to follow.

The overall design is easy on the eyes but has that independently-produced look due mainly to the lack of margins throughout the book.I estimate that roughly only 15%-20% of the book’s 357 content pages have any direct bearing on the title subject of “black and white”, with many of these pages buried like Easter eggs inside broader topics.

Like nearly all of the dozens of kindred books on digital printing and digital photography most of this book’s content deals with basic tech and photo topics, survey-level smatterings of “current” software and printers, and little side-bars.

While Diallo presents these topics interestingly and with good subject matter authority they can be found in many other basic books and have a rather short freshness life. All this is not to say that the book is without merit.

Although he does indeed mow some well-trimmed lawns Diallo offers some rather unique material and interesting perspectives. In chapter 8, titled “The Limited Edition”, Diallo presents a good summary of the controversial topic of artificially editioning digital prints.

Like other chapters, however, that same chapter manages to meander into other territories (papers, print storage, archival ratings) before it’s terminated. Chapter 9, “The Portfolio”, also nicely covers a topic that many will find interesting; that of constructing and presenting a contiguous portfolio of work.

Diallo also features some interesting little interviewsIn summary, this book delivers very little of what its title promises. Instead, it’s really more of an intermediate-level general book on Photoshop and ink jet printing circa 2007.

Nevertheless I really did enjoyed reading it, more so than most of its peers that I’ve read. But, like so many of its peers, its value is diluted by trying to cover far too much ground. I was disappointed that the title represented yet another bait-and-switch.

The market for the truly specialized “Digital Black and White Photography and Printing” work remains open. Next!

I had hoped to find some basics in this book for digital B&W, but I found mostly over-the-top information that was of no use to me. I have enjoyed photography as a hobby for over 40 years, so I am not new to it.

Instead of taking the reader thru the basics and then following with more advanced info, the writer hits the reader with some of the most technical aspects of digital photopraphy. This book might be okay for someone who considers themself a very advanced amature or a wannabe pro.

This is not a book for someone looking for basic digital B&W help. I got the impression that the author has all of this knowledge and is trying to impress the reader with how much he knows.
