How to think monochrome and what that means. How to use texture, pattern, lines, shape and form as essential elements to good Black & White photographs. Simple lighting and conversion techniques that can make faces glow or feel ominous and give your Black & White portraits a ton of impact.

How to use light and shadow to enhance your Black & White photos How exposure differs when thinking about Black & White vs. color. That not all scenes are suitable for Black & White and how to avoid certain color combinations don’t have enough contrast or distinction between shades.

Previous knowledge of using an SLR camera on manual is necessary as there is only a very brief recap on this topic. You should be able to read a camera meter and adjust shutter speed and aperture to obtain a correct exposure. If you’re not comfortable with your camera on manual settings, why not take our “Beginning to see the light” workshop which will instruct and demonstrate how to use your camera away from the comfort of auto settings and enable you to gain confidence and begin using any camera more creatively.

I probably shot 7,000 rolls of Black & White film before shooting 100 rolls of color back in the day as a newspaper photographer. I still see and think Black & White and then my mind adds color to the scene, which is why many of my images have a strong graphic component.

I’m Interested in the Black & White Film Photography Workshop!

We will start with a two-hour classroom session where we will go over the principles of Black & White photography and get you thinking monochrome. Then we will get out and shoot at a couple of locations that are well suited to Black & White images. I’ll be looking over your shoulder as you shoot, offering tips for better composition. In the afternoon we will be back in the classroom to learn about converting photos in Lightroom using photos you made in the morning. We will also have a gentle critique of the photos you shot so you’ll know what you did right and what you need to work on in the future.

If you must forfeit your workshop fee I will refund your full payment if I can fill your spot. I will also issue you a credit to be used on another workshop within the next year.

During the first part of the session we aim to be out on location on the Dingle Peninsula and begin with a familiarisation session of your manual camera, lens and film. We’ll then explore exposure, lighting, tonal range and the use of filters before passing completely into the abstract world of black and white composition. We’ll explore a number of different locations and subjects during the day before heading back to base to learn about and practice the stages of processing before you get to load your film in a developing tank and process it for real.

Occasionally we’d like to send you details of our upcoming photography tours, workshops and holidays on the Dingle Peninsula.

No partial refunds are made for unused portions or services of a workshop. Workshops are sold as a package only.

Alternative Processes & History of Photography (Teen Workshop) – Summer 2018

Consistently making a beautiful Black & White photo requires more than just clicking a button in your computer or making a menu selection in your camera. It is a thought process from inception to output of your final image.

Aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, and ISO: how do they work together? Metering and shooting with a 35mm film camera Film processing: how to turn exposed film into negatives for printing film developing chemistry, and how it works Making a contact sheet in the black and white darkroom

DESCRIPTION Go from camera to darkroom in just five hours. Start off by shooting a roll of Black and White film on your 35mm camera, learning how aperture, shutter speed and depth of field will affect your results. Then learn how to process your film and obtain negatives for printing. Move into the darkroom and begin your introduction to the basics of printing by making a contact sheet and selecting an image to start working with. This workshop is focused on shooting and processing film, with a basic introduction to working in the darkroom. Students looking to expand their printing experience in the darkroom should consider our Crash Course in B&W Printing – another one-day workshop devoted to hands-on experience in the darkroom.

If a workshop is cancelled, you will receive a full refund of any money paid, but I’d have to be on my deathbed before I’d cancel.

Whether you are photographing people, landscapes or cityscapes, knowing how to look for shape, form, contrast, texture and pattern within a strong composition is what makes for exciting Black & White images.
