Black And White Photo Booth.

Look for Contrast, Shape and Texture. The complimentary and opposing colours that bring a colour image to life are all reduced to black and white or shades of grey in a monochrome image and you have to look for tonal contrast to make a shot stand out. In colour photography, for example, your eye would instantly be drawn to a red object on a green background, but in monochrome photography these two areas are likely to have the same brightness, so the image looks flat and dowdy straight from the camera. providentially , it’s possible to work adjust the brightness of these two colours separately to introduce some contrast. However, a good starting point is to look for scenes with tonal contrast. There are always exceptions, but as a general rule look for scenes that contain some strong blacks and whites. This can be achieved by the light or by the brightness (or tone) of the objects in the scene as well as the exposure settings that you use. The brightness of the bark of a silver birch tree for example, should inject some contrast (and interest) in to a woodland scene. Setting the exposure for these brighter areas also makes the shadows darker, so the highlights stand out even more. Look for shapes, patterns and textures in a scene and move around to find the greatest composition.

Dodge and Burn. Dodging and burning is a system that comes from the traditional darkroom and is usually used to burn in or darken highlights and hold back (brighten) shadows. Photoshop’s Dodge and Burn tools allow a level of control that film photographers should only ambition of because you can target the highlights, shadows or mid-tones with both. This means that you could use the Burn tool to darken highlights when they are too bright, or the Dodge tool to brighten them to increase local contrast. It’s a good routine of giving a sense of better sharpness and enhancing texture. Plus, because you should set the opacity of the tools, you may build up her effect gradually so the impact is crafty and there are no hard edges.

Shoot RAW + JPEG. The best monochrome conversions are stumbled on by editing raw files which have the full colour information, but if you shoot raw and JPEG files simultaneously and set the camera to its monochrome picture Style/Picture Control/Film Simulation mode you get an indication of how the image will look in black and white. As numerous photographers struggle to visualise a scene in black and white, these monochrome modes are an invaluable tool that will help with composition and scene assessment. many cameras are also capable of producing decent in-camera monochrome images these days and it’s worth experimenting with image parameters (usually contrast, sharpness, filter effects and toning) to find a look that you like. Because compact style cameras and compact cameras show the scene seen by the sensor with camera settings applied, users of these cameras are able to preview the monochrome image in the electronic viewfinder or on rear screen before taking the shot. DSLR users may also do this if they activate her camera’s live assumption process , but the usually slower responses mean that numerous will find it preferable or check the image on the screen post-capture.

Use Filters. Graduated neutral density (AKA ND grad) and polarizing filters are merely as useful in monochrome photography as they are in colour. In fact, because they manipulate image contrast they are arguably more advantageous . An ND grad is collaborative when you want to retain detail in a bright sky while a polarizing filter could be used to decrease reflections and boost contrast. Alternatively, assess taking two or more shots with diverse exposures to create a high dynamic range (HDR) composite. Don’t be anxious to use a ND grad with a standard neural density filter if the sky is brighter than the foreground in a long exposure shot. Coloured filters, which are an essential tool for monochrome film photographers, can also be advantageous for manipulating contrast in digital images. They work by darkening objects of his opposite colour while lightening objects of his own. An orange filter, for example, will darken the blue of the sky while a green single will lighten foliage.

Take Control. Although coloured filters could still be used to manipulate contrast when shooting digital black and white images, it’s more prominent to save this work until the processing stage. Until a a couple years ago Photoshop’s Channel Mixer was the favorite means of turning colour images monochrome, but now Adobe Camera Raw has more powerful tools (in the HSL/Grayscale tab) that allow you to adjust the brightness of eight individual colours that make up the image. It’s possible to adjust one of these colours to make it anything from white to black with the sliding control. However, it’s important to keep an eye on the whole image when adjusting a particular colour as subtle gradations could become unnatural looking. And adjusting the brightness of a red or rosy shirt with the red sliding control, for instance , will have an impact on the model’s skin, especially the lips. The Levels and Curves controls can also be used to manipulate tonal range and contrast, but the HSL/Grayscale controls allow you to create discrimination between objects of the same brightness but with diverse colours.

Try Long Exposure. Long exposure shots can work really well in monochrome photography, especially where there’s moving water or clouds. During the exposure the highlights of the water, for example, are recorded across a wider place than they would with a short exposure and this could help enhance tonal contrast. The blurring of the movement also adds textural contrast with any solid objects in the frame. If compulsory , use a neutral density filter such as Lee Filters’ Big Stopper or Little Stopper to decrease exposure and extend shutter speed (by 10 and 4 stops respectively). characteristically , when exposures extend beyond regarding 1/60 sec a tripod is required to keep the camera still and avoid blurring. It’s also advisable to use a remote release and mirror lock-up to minimise vibration and produce super-sharp images.

There are several photo booth services popping up and becoming known for their flawless black and white images. Most of them aren’t even really a photo booth in the classic sense at all. Instead, they use cameras and sometimes tablets leverage automation and photo-editing software. People often stand in front of the tablet while the screen mirrors back a selfie. In some cases, there is an automated count down while in others, a photo booth attendant triggers the shutter at the moment they decide is right. Within the span of about ten to 15 seconds, the photo runs through some automated photo editing software, and a physical copy is printed out on the spot. In regards to many of the black and white filter or editing process (specifically the “Kardashian photo booth”), a Reddit user offered this advice when trying to duplicate it: Take a photo, convert it to black and white, decrease the contrast, fade the blacks, reduce the noise, and sharpen it. What is left is a very greyscale image with lots of tonal range and little contrast. The details are almost blurred together.

The Kardashian photo booth is awesome! We do something similar but there are a lot of huge differences. We’ve been getting lots of questions lately about the differences between the Portraits On White and the “Kardashian photo booth” — the style of black and white Photo Booth that have been seen all over the Kardashian sisters’ social media sites. What better opportunity to talk a bit about the similarities as well as the differences.

The Portraits On White are a refreshing alternative to automated photo booths because our portraits require, firstly, a seasoned photographer. We’re real people who care about your memories 🙂 Read more…

I loved the Portraits On White the minute I saw them. When I had the opportunity to be in one and later saw how flawless my skin looked, I loved the series even more and knew I had to share them with you.

Over 15 years of serving happy clients with passion and drive.

We love love love the photos and we absolutely adore these portraits. They are truly a reflection of the wonderful people we love and hold dearly in our lives.

Our grandpa never smiles! Thanks so much for making him laugh and for capturing it in these beautiful photos.

“Best shots of us… like ever!!” is what I heard at various times throughout the evening. Myself and my group of friends were super impressed with your work.

The Portraits On White is a live, photo booth that captures unique, black and white portraits of your guests at any event. Our services were conceived from a desire to provide people with a source of entertainment while also creating meaningful images to commemorate the occasion. The result? We developed a beautiful and bold style of photography that focuses on what’s really important: the people. This minimalistic approach enables us to capture things that are far from gimmick-y like a good belly laugh between age-old friends; a sweet look between a new bride and groom; a rare kiss between grandma and grandpa … moments that are worthy of being printed and displayed alongside your most cherished memories.

First, let’s talk about the set up! The Kardashian photo booth setup generally uses a custom built device that incorporates a screen or even tablet in order for guests to see themselves and for their attendant to capture the images. Call us “old school” but we still use a good old human being to talk and interact with every single guest. This human being is also a professional photographer equipped with a professional camera — the same ones we use on commercial and editorial sets. As such, they’re fast, reliable and shoot at an incredible quality that beats any entry-level camera or tablet.
