The book, part memoir and part business manual, was written with journalist Tony Schwartz and helped to raise Trump’s public profile. Trump later refers to it as one of his proudest accomplishments, and his second favourite book after the Bible. Schwartz tells the New Yorker he regrets agreeing to ghost write the book.

Everybody, everybody, throughout all of our country. That includes the inner cities.” The concert was open to the public and filled with his supporters (including actor John Voight). He reminded them how sceptical people were of his success prior to the election, saying “they forgot about a lot of us, on the campaign, I called it the forgotten man and the forgotten woman. Well, you’re not forgotten anymore.”

Within a year of becoming the owner of The Trump Organization which owned 14,000 properties in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, Donald Trump, aged 26, faced his first major controversy. The Department of Justice sued him and his father Fred C Trump and charged him with discriminating against tenants because of their race. His first mention in The New York Times, in an article entitled, “Major Landlord Accused of Antiblack Bias in City,” was to deny the allegations. “They are absolutely ridiculous”, he said. Trump Management later reached an agreement that did not admit guilt, but required providing the New York Urban League with a list of apartment vacancies every week for two years. Standing outside Trump Tower, he tells crowds on 16 June that “We need somebody that literally will take this country and make it great again. We can do that… I am officially running for president of the United States.” Trump emphasises his business credentials and his position as a Washington outsider as reasons to support him. However, it’s the offence caused to Mexicans when he calls them “rapists,” as well as the “great, great wall” he pledges to build on the Mexican border that draws the most attention. Against the predictions of pollsters and popular global assumption, Trump is confirmed as winner of the presidential race after winning swing states including North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania. In one of the biggest political upsets in history, Trump managed to secure the rust belt states, as well as some traditionally Democrat battlegrounds, reaching 270 votes before Hillary Clinton, who conceded early Wednesday morning. Speculation on what a Trump presidency will mean for America and for the rest of the world immediately starts to circulate. His win exposes the deep anti-establishment sentiment in America, as well as the bitter divisions within society and the discontent of so-called “forgotten voters.” Trump attempted to soothe anxieties in his victory speech, stating that “now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division and to get together… as one united people. I pledge to every citizen of the land that I will be president for all Americans.” Financial markets swing wildly as the value of the dollar plummets and Anti-Trump riots erupt across the US.

“As an adolescent, I was mostly interested in creating mischief,” writes Donald Trump in his book The Art of the Deal. After his parents sent him to The New York Military Academy, aged 13, he quickly learned how to follow orders and earned various reputations including someone capable of bending the rules to his own needs, a ladies’ man, and exuded an air of entitlement and superiority. This ridiculously detailed Washington Post story is worth a read.
Although Trump is publicly assumed to be rich and very financially-savvy, by 1990 his debts exceeded the value of his properties by hundreds of millions of dollars. He’s removed from the Forbes 100 List, but is helped by his lenders to avoid personal bankruptcy. This Washington Post piece from 1992 offers some useful insight as to why the bank and Trump’s investors made a series of deals that left him wealthy.

The show billed itself as “the ultimate job interview,” with contestants battling for the change to secure a high-level management job in one of Trump’s commercial enterprises. Trump was a registered democrat from 2001- 2008, telling CNN interviewer Wolf Blitzer in 2004 that “in many cases, I probably identify more as Democrat. It just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than the Republicans. Now, it shouldn’t be that way. But if you go back, I mean it just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats. …But certainly we had some very good economies under Democrats, as well as Republicans. But we’ve had some pretty bad disasters under the Republicans.”
The two nominees clash in front of tens of millions of people in a series of debates marked by exceptionally vitriolic language. The Republican nominee says that Hillary would be “in jail” in he were president, arguing that she “has tremendous hate in her heart.” Hillary Clinton calls Trump’s “demagogic” rhetoric around Islam “short-sighted and even dangerous,” says that “Donald always take cares of Donald” and accuses him of being unprepared to be president. During the second debate, Trump admits taking advantage of tax loopholes. Public polls show that most Americans felt that Clinton outdid Trump in all three debates.

Melania Trump delivers a speech at the Republican national convention which sounds indisputably similar to the address Michelle Obama gave at the Democratic Convention in 2008. Her emphasis on family values and on wanting “our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them” was compared online and by media outlets throughout the world to Obama’s wording: “we want our children – and all children in this nation – to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.” The Trump campaign denied accusations of plagiarism, despite an initial statement from the campaign’s senior communications adviser and Trump’s speechwriter Jason Miller saying that Melania Trump’s speech included “fragments” of others’ speeches that “reflected her own thinking.”

Hillary Clinton’s camp argue that Donald Trump has “actively encouraged” foreign powers to hack her emails after he suggested that Russia could find the 30,000 emails she did not hand over as part of the investigation into her private email server. He then tweets: “if Russia or any other country or person has Hillary Clinton’s 33,000 illegally deleted emails, perhaps they should share them with the FBI!” Both Russia and Trump were quick to deny the allegation that Russia hacked into emails from the DNC for Trump’s benefit, but his VP Mike Pence admitted that if the FBI did find that Russia was attempting to interfere with the election, there would be “serious consequences.” Mrs Clinton’s senior policy adviser Jake Sullivan says that “this has to be the first time that a major presidential candidate has actively encouraged a foreign power to conduct espionage against his political opponent.”

This is perceived as a snub by numerous British media outlets, who suggest that Trump’s decision not to prioritise the British prime minister is a response to May’s comments from December 2015 that Trump’s remarks about Muslims were “divisive, unhelpful and wrong.” A spokesperson for Number 10 said that they discussed the “very important and very special” relationship between Britain and the US as “President-elect Trump set out his close and personal connections with, and warmth for, the UK.” The Prime Minister “highlighted her wish to strengthen bilateral trade and investment with the US as we leave the EU,” he added.
