Black And White Photo Restoration.

Take Control. Although coloured filters could still be used to manipulate contrast when shooting digital black and white images, it’s more common to save this work until the processing stage. Until a some years ago Photoshop’s Channel Mixer was the preferred means of turning colour images monochrome, but now Adobe Camera Raw has more strong tools (in the HSL/Grayscale tab) that allow you to adjust the brightness of eight individual colours that make up the image. It’s possible to adjust single of these colours to make it anything from white to black with the sliding control. However, it’s important to keep an eye on the whole image when adjusting a particular colour as crafty gradations could become unnatural looking. And adjusting the brightness of a red or pink shirt with the red sliding control, for instance , will have an impact on the model’s skin, especially the lips. The Levels and Curves controls could also be used to manipulate tonal range and contrast, but the HSL/Grayscale controls allow you to create differentiation between objects of the same brightness but with varied colours.

Dodge and Burn. Dodging and burning is a mannerism that comes from the traditional darkroom and is usually used to burn in or darken highlights and hold back (brighten) shadows. Photoshop’s Dodge and Burn tools allow a level of control that film photographers can only hope of because you should target the highlights, shadows or mid-tones with both. This means that you may use the Burn tool to darken highlights when they are too bright, or the Dodge tool to brighten up them to increase local contrast. It’s a good plan of giving a sense of superior sharpness and enhancing texture. Plus, because you could set the opacity of the tools, you should build up her effect gradually so the impact is subtle and there are no hard edges.

Shoot RAW + JPEG. The greatest monochrome conversions are made it to by editing raw files which have the full colour information, but if you shoot raw and JPEG files simultaneously and set the camera to its monochrome picture Style/Picture Control/Film Simulation mode you get an indication of how the image will look in black and white. As many photographers struggle to visualise a scene in black and white, these monochrome modes are an invaluable tool that will help with composition and scene assessment. most cameras are also capable of producing decent in-camera monochrome images these days and it’s worth experimenting with image parameters (usually contrast, sharpness, filter effects and toning) to find a look that you like. Because compact path cameras and compact cameras show the scene seen by the sensor with camera settings applied, users of these cameras are able to preview the monochrome image in the electronic viewfinder or on rear screen before taking the shot. DSLR users should also do this if they kick in his camera’s live theory method , but the usually slower responses mean that numerous will find it preferable or check the image on the screen post-capture.

Use Filters. Graduated neutral density (AKA ND grad) and polarizing filters are just as useful in monochrome photography as they are in colour. In fact, because they manipulate image contrast they are arguably more useful . An ND grad is supportive when you require to retain detail in a bright sky while a polarizing filter should be used to decrease reflections and boost contrast. Alternatively, put down as,take for, account, reckon, treat, adjudge, size up,value, rate, gauge, sum up,weigh up taking two or more shots with different exposures to create a high dynamic range (HDR) composite. Don’t be anxious to use a ND grad with a standard neural density filter if the sky is brighter than the foreground in a long exposure shot. Coloured filters, which are an essential tool for monochrome film photographers, may also be useful for manipulating contrast in digital images. They work by darkening objects of his opposite colour while lightening objects of his own. An orange filter, for example, will darken the blue of the sky while a green single will lighten foliage.

Look for Contrast, Shape and Texture. The complimentary and opposing colours that bring a colour image to life are all decreased to black and white or shades of grey in a monochrome image and you have to look for tonal contrast to make a shot stand out. In colour photography, for example, your eye would right away be drawn to a red object on a green background, but in monochrome photography these two areas are likely to have the same brightness, so the image looks flat and drab straight from the camera. luckily , it’s possible to work adjust the brightness of these two colours singly to introduce some contrast. However, a good starting point is to look for scenes with tonal contrast. There are always exceptions, but as a general rule look for scenes that contain some forceful blacks and whites. This should be achieved by the light or by the brightness (or tone) of the objects in the scene as well as the exposure settings that you use. The brightness of the bark of a silver birch tree for example, could inject some contrast (and interest) in to a woodland scene. Setting the exposure for these brighter areas also makes the shadows darker, so the highlights stand out even more. Look for shapes, patterns and textures in a scene and move around to find the unsurpassed composition.

Try Long Exposure. Long exposure shots could work really well in monochrome photography, especially where there’s moving water or clouds. During the exposure the highlights of the water, for example, are recorded across a wider place than they would with a short exposure and this may help enhance tonal contrast. The blurring of the movement also adds textural contrast with any solid objects in the frame. If required , use a neutral density filter such as Lee Filters’ Big Stopper or Little Stopper to decrease exposure and extend shutter speed (by 10 and 4 stops respectively). classically , when exposures extend beyond with reference to 1/60 sec a tripod is wanted to keep the camera still and avoid blurring. It’s also advisable to use a remote release and mirror lock-up to minimise vibration and produce super-sharp images.

Digital Restoration from Start to Finish, Second Edition: How to repair old and damaged photographs

After repair this image was 10 x 15 inches in size and a framed copy was provided to each brother.

One of my favorite hobbies is the art of digital photo restoration. It’s thrilling to take an old photo and give it new life again and to preserve our history for future generations. Over the years, old photographs deteriorate and fading, speckling, cracking, and creasing are common.

Graduation pictures with text or overlays on them I don’t fix even if you have a letter from the photographer saying its OK. The watermarks are usually placed over the eyes and mouth making it difficult to repair. Most images I can repair even if they are not flat. If you want to repair the images yourself – I have posted a tutorial and movie on how to do it here do it on my other web site. If you have a lot of photos I can train you to repair the images yourself – it just takes time and a little bit of talent, scanner, computer, and Adobe Photoshop. If your photos were damaged in a flood, fire or other catastrophe your insurance company might pay for the repair. I don’t fix or work on original prints as this a specialized craft and in most cases beyond the price of most people.

This type of filters cannot fill all little dots and scrapes slovenly. It is also impossible to improve the whole little objects and spoils at the clothes elements and face skin at this level. That is why if the editor wished to get know how to restore an old photo and how to avoid thick scrapes go to the Layer Panel, after that click New and choose the tool Layer. After clicking Ok the new layer will be created, where we can cope with some big spoils at the foreground.

It is the last step the photo retouchers should to remember during the process of black and white photos retouching. This technique is extremely popular among the editors and when they offer the possible options how to restore an old photo, colorizing is situated on the first place. The number of ways for providing this is really great. For example in the item Let’s give it a go to colorize black and white photos online with Klimbim the procedure of colorizing the black and white picture is described.

The best book I’ve ever read on the subject of photo restoration. Thorough detail, easy to follow and it taught me a lot of new tricks I didn’t know previously. It’s definitely worth the investment if you are taking on larger restoration projects or considering doing restorations as a sideline business.

It is the beginning step during the editing procedure of all kinds of pictures. So, open the original photo. Firstly, make your picture retouchable, do it with pressing thumbnail on the Background layer. After that you are allowed to crop the shot and in such way you will have no troubles with an improving of the little photo parts on the edges. Choose the instrument Crop. This option is to be found in the Panel Tool. Then choose Bar and after this step go to the option Original Ratio.

Above shows a damaged photo and on the left the image after digital repair.

I can’t repair all images, color prints soaked in water often result in the dyes being washed away, I can’t return a face that’s not there. I can replace an arm, ear, eye, etc in some cases. I can remove the background and alter the images in many circumstances and I can add folks. By scanning the images at high resolution I can make an 8 x10 inch photo from a wallet size photo. If the image is blurry, I can sharpen it a bit – but there are limits. Some folks ask if I can return the color – in some cases if there is still a hint I can bring it back (see below). Alternatively I can digitally paint some colours in. In all instances I provide you with the digital files which you can share, or have printed. I also provide low resolution .jpg files at no extra charge which you can email, post on the web or upload to a social media sharing site.

Today’s photo papers are much better than in the past. Advancements like Photoshop allow us to digitally repair damaged photographs and then reprint them on archival quality papers that will last at least 100 years. For this project I am using Photoshop version CS5, however CS6 is expected to have even more “content aware” tools that will be even better for this type of work. Digital imaging has already come such a long way and restored photographs make people’s hearts melt – especially ones they thought were beyond repair. There’s nothing like the look in a loved one’s eyes when they see a restored photograph – talk about “priceless”.

Brothers that had all purchased a car in the 1950’s from the same dealer were invited to the delaershiop for this group photo . The photo was was stained wrinkled and in poor condition.

This photo was very easy because it already had great details, very little damage and fading etc. I went to image – adjustments – saturation and desaturated the color from the image a bit before going on to my final step.

The original photo on the left was a daguerreotype  which was the first commercially successful photographic process (1839-1860) in the history of photography. Named after the inventor, Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, each daguerreotype is a unique image on a silvered copper plate. The digitally restored image is on the right.

Look for some of the old photographs in your home, pull them out and consider having them digitally repaired, these are just a few samples of what I have worked on over the years. Having old images repaired makes and excellent gift. I would love to see your old images and help your restore them.

It will make darker the lost grey colors at the used shot. To make the picture brighter move the bright input layer to the point of about 210. And the last task here is to improvement of midtones. Do it with moving the grey cursor to 1.24. Now you aware how to restore faded color photos in Photoshop.

This old photograph was hand painted on the left and had numerous stains. On the right is the repaired image.

The first thing you want to do is digitally photograph or get a very high quality scan of your original photograph. I do not have a high powered enough scanner so for my projects I do a high quality DSLR photograph of the original. If you plan to scan your photos you need to have at absolute minimum a 300 dpi scanner – the higher the dpi the better so that you can avoid as much loss of detail as possible.

So, what I am going to attempt to do in this hub is show others how to do some very basic photo restoration techniques. These tips are great for faded photos with minor damage. Things with missing pieces, major damage, mildew etc. are a whole different project and hopefully I’ll learn more about making video tutorials for the more advanced stuff. In the meantime – enjoy this simple photo restoration (my lovely mother when she was a little girl) and try some of the tips and techniques yourself.

As a rule the clients ask to improve or to fix damaged pictures, which are so essential for them. They take care of the history of their family and want to remember the happiest events for a long time. The time never waits for us and the only opportunity to save the most essential moments in our memory is to take a photo. But after that we have to think how to save them in the primal state.

Such photos lose their color and during photo editing process the professional retouchers have to know how to digitally restore old photos and especially essential is to fix this problem. So, the first step here is contrast rising.  Choose the proper Layer, then go to the New Adjustment Layer, when you did it, move the dark input layer to the point 26-29.

Once my photo was finished I resized it to be the same size as the original actual photograph and that is what I will print out to give to my mom. You can save them and create larger images – however when you do that a lot of the image quality is lost. You typically want your photo restorations to be around the same size of the original.

The first thing we want to do in this picture is to remove some dust and scratches using the dust and scratch filter. In Photoshop you go to Filter-Noise-Dust & Scratches. Keep the settings low so as not to lose a lot of detail. You will still have to manually remove a lot of it, but this is a good start. I set the radius at 1px and the threshold at 3 levels. Use the preview feature and adjust levels accordingly being careful to not remove too much detail.

The Original The original photograph before I restored it (it’s my mama and she gave me permission lol)

Clone tool is great for fixing larger areas that need repair. In this photograph there was a fairly large spot of discoloration in her gown. I used the clone tool to repair this by placing the tool directly above the spot I want to repair. Hold alt and click to pick up the sample, move down to the spot to be repaired and left click and voila – a new patch is seamlessly placed and blends in perfectly. **Update 2015** The newer versions of Photoshop (6 and up) have great “content aware” settings for various tools making this process a whole heck of a lot easier now!

Clone Stamp is the option which is very useful here. Take a brush, the tip should be soft and round, Size 10. Press Aligned. We need Sample Current and Below to work further. Click Alt on the necessary place and pulverize to expand the area around the neighboring scrape. And to teach the amateur how to restore old photos in Photoshop in details we suggest you using of Healing Brush for changing the scrapes on closer areas.

Before and after photos – the image above took me about 30 minutes to repair.

Create another new layer from this one. As we did originally we will work on this new layer and hide/lock the previous one. The new layer is what we are going to use to create our new photograph. The first thing here is to adjust your brightness and contrast. For this photo I really bumped up the contrast to bring out the details in the photograph.

In order to fix the image on the left I had to find a new arm – this was a challenging image to repair.

Fixing old photos is something I enjoy doing and I have been doing it for 20 years. I like to bring old photos back to life and in some sense it also exposes me to some of the history of photography. The basic process is that I make a high resolution scan of the image or take a photograph on a 36 Mega pixel camera of large images I can’t scan and then I digitally repair them in Photoshop. Scanning takes about 5 minutes per image and digital repair usually takes between 5 minutes to an hour or two. Only really damaged photos might take more then an hour. I can’t perform miracles like put someones face back that has completed faded, but I can make old, faded and damaged images look new again. I can colour or hand-paint old black and white photos, provide black and white, sepia or coloured images. I can even convert the photos so they simulate a water colour or oil painting. I disturb the original image as little as possible . I am often asked to provide prints, I can, but frankly its cheaper to take the digital files to your favourite print shop (I recommend London Drugs).

For this project I am using Photoshop CS5 – I realize not everyone has this kind of software, but many of the tools and techniques I am using can be replicated in other software’s to a degree.

*HINT* When repairing marks, scratches etc. have your picture blown up at 100 – 200% so you can catch all the details. **

For my final step – I wanted to give this photograph a nice sepia tone. The light sepia tone (instead of the dark one from the original) adds warmth and a soft glow to this picture that I really love. To do this I went to Image – Adjustments – Photo Filter from here you are given a drop down menu and I chose the “Sepia” option and placed it around 15%. Again, you can use your preview option and try different filters on for size and see what you like. This setting gave my photo a great finishing touch.

One more essential tip here, which explains the editor how to restore black and white photos, is that a lot of scribe mark damage will be filled.  But the problem is that during this type of retouching you lose also vital details at the picture. You can avoid this trouble in the Layer Panel. You need white Smart Filter layer and when you chose it, press the key-combination Cmd/Ctrl+I.

the circled area displays larger areas of discoloration where you can use the “clone” tool to patch it up by cloning from a nearby source.

Photo Retouching Services > Retouching Blog > How To Guide > How to restore black and white photos in 10 steps

How to restore black and white photos properly? Nowadays this question is quite often asked by photo retouchers. Each image editor should know how to restore old photos in Photoshop. It is no wonder, that this service is becoming especially popular among the customers. People desire to save their priceless memories or bring them a new life. That is why the number of photo restoration services is so high today. We understand how it is important for our clients to keep the history and moreover, we aware very good how to restore old photos digitally.

With your original copy in place create a new layer – this will be the layer you start working on. Lock the original layer and turn off the “eyeball” to hide it – you don’t want to alter your original layer.

The next step is to remove some speckles and noise from this photograph. You do this in Photoshop by going to Filter – Noise – Reduce Noise. Here your settings will depend entirely on your photograph and how “speckled” it appears etc. My photo was quite grainy so I did this filter at full strength and sharpened the details. Use the preview feature and adjust your settings accordingly.

This is another area where every photo will be different – if your original photograph is “washed out” looking – you will want to adjust the exposure (image – adjustments – exposure) and increase contrast / decrease brightness. Some photos are very dark – and then you would do the opposite. This is an area where it’s great to experiment. (also why you saved your previous layers if you screw up just go back 😉 ) You can also try the “auto tone” feature – or experiment with the different settings by going to Image – adjustments – and then you’ll have all sorts of options.

Also keep in mind this is designed to be a very basic beginner’s project! There are much more advanced things we can do – like adjust highlights/contrast in specific areas – remove the girl and put her in a different background – bring out the details in the stuffed bunny she is holding etc. – This was designed as a basic picture overhaul

I use the clone tool for cracks, and you can also apply filters. Use the clone tool to go through and clean up the cracks in larger areas. You can then apply a bit of a blur to the edges if you need to. Also, content aware healing tools are amazing things and do most of the work for you if you are using CS6 or newer versions of Photoshop.

If you desire to perfect the composition of the whole details, which can be a little wrong, use the Clone Stamp instrument. Do it in Sample Current & Below panel. Press Alt to try the neighboring clear detail and pulverize to expand it around the patched section.

Another daguerreotype on the left and restored on the right. The original image was just about an inch in height, whereas the final restored image was 8 x 10 inch. On the left you can see tape residue over the photo.

When we got the proper size of the edited image, we are to rotate it if the objects at our photo are situated wrong. For that change the position of the roller outside of the used crop panel and try to move the image. As you see, you have got a translucent edge, and you have the chance to change this later. So, press ticking or Enter, in such a way you will crop his picture.

In order to tell you how much it costs to fix a particular photo I need to see the image. In some instance if you can send 300 dpi or higher resolution scans I can work with them, but generally I need to scan or re-photograph the images and I can give you better results if I can work from the original print. Generally, the images can cost from about $10 to $200 to repair depending on the size of the image, and the amount of damage – but you will never get any surprises I will tell you before we start. I generally remove images from frames if possible. Images that are burned onto glass or that have become glued to the glass can sometimes be separated, if not I scan through the glass.

Repaired photos in black and white, sepia and coloured – hand colouring costs extra because it takes more time.

The remaining touch ups – fixing specks, repairing lines/creases can be done using the clone tool and the spot healing brush. The spot healing brush has become much more intuitive and useful in CS5 Photoshop over other versions and it cleans up specks/spots nicely. For my touch ups on this photo I used a round brush with 75% hardness – a hard brush will be very noticeable so soften it and use a brush size that is just slightly larger than the spot you are repairing.

So, we have already fixed the scrapes with the help of Spot Healing Brush technique and Patch instrument. Now it is time to reduce silvering. First of all use Stamp Visible option one more time. Take the Burn option and choose the Midtones in the Range. After this reduce the Expose to 50%. And pulverize over the motley silver texture in the lower edge to make it firstly darker and to hide it then at all. Now you know almost the whole secrets how to restore faded color photos in Photoshop.

The original photo on the left was hand painted, I show the BW, sepia and Photoshop coloured versions I created.

As you see the procedure of black and white pictures restoration is difficult and the retouchters need to know perfectly how to restore old photos in Photoshop. The “finished” product – at least for a beginner’s project 🙂

I know a lot of people who restore photographs make them look “too perfect” and that isn’t what people typically want either 🙂 because old photos are ..well… old. You can leave a few little imperfections and the photo will look more authentic – what you are really after is to remove more serious flaws – you’ll notice my photo still has some little flaws etc. Don’t sweat the small stuff too much or your picture will look “fake”.

In this instance the original was in color on the left, but faded. I was able to restore the original color and make a sepia and BW version from the original.

Stay here and go to the Content-Aware. Here you have to state Very Strict in the Adaption option. Mark Sample All Layers. Press Layer 1 after that mark the place round the scratches. With the help of cursor choose the proper section. The part you selected will fill a base patch and in such a way the pixels in this area will mix with each other.

To give the image more color, open a new Layer. Work with Layer’s Blend Mode for Color and Opacity, take the Brush, a soft round edge will be the most suitable. Now we will draw the skin and face.

When you try to figure out how to digitally restore old photos, you must pay attention to this step. After enhancing the details click Layer Stack in the Layer of Levels Adjustment. The key combination Shift+Cmd/Ctrl+Alt+E allows you to use Stamp Visible option. This function combines the layers, which you used before.  After the manipulations with the necessary objects you can replace a duplicate of the choosing on a new layer.

Above shows the before and after shot of a photo that I restored for a women’s 90th birthday. The cost of photo-restoration is less than you might think. I will give you a fixed price before I begin and I guarantee satisfaction or you don’t have to buy the image. Contact me for a quote.

This is one of the most important steps, which deals with all kinds of damaged spots in the image. Each photo retoucher, who wants to learn everything about the theme how to restore old photos in Photoshop professionally, must know the procedure of scratch removing.  In the instrument Patch choose the Option Bar.

You can save some money by bringing a USB stick for me to transfer the files onto, or alternatively I charge $10 to burn the images to a DVD. I usually keep a copy of your images in case you lose the files unless you specifically ask me to delete them. If you have a lot of images to repair I can offer you a discount. Often I can have the images repaired in 24-48 hours.

At this step it is better to see the picture in Zoom. In Tool box choose Brush option and take soft round point. Make the foreground color of the picture white and mark it with pressing black Smart Filter. After doing this you are allowed to fill the whole dust and scribe mark damage.

If your grandma was like mine, she loved to record every event in ink on the back of all of her photographs. Although this probably seemed like a stellar record keeping idea at the time, one of the most common damages I see is ink bleed through. It can be so disheartening to see ink and other issues wreak havoc on an otherwise fantastic old photograph. Fortunately, it is getting easier to repair this damage digitally and revive photos.

That is why we decided to help the amateur photo retouchers with this problem. Click Edit, then go to the Transform and choose Flip Horizontal. Press the combination Cmd/Ctrl+T. Append a Layer Mask, disperse a dark brush to mix the edited part with the surround.
