A Zine, pronounced “zeen”, is an independently created small scale publication that’s often oozing with it’s own highly personal style. Inspired by my favorite zines (like Cometbus and the Hamburger Eyes collective), I wanted go for a simple no-frills approach to print that focuses on the content while keeping pretty affordable. In order to work directly with printers for the best pricing, I need to meet certain quantities, which is why I’m aiming to reach $5,000 for printing my first two issues ($2,500 per issue).

Stretch goals. My goal is to under-promise and over deliver. I’m hoping to throw in a few extras with each issue, as well as do my own silk-screening for each package I send out. For every $1,000 I raise over my goal, I’ll include an extra 4 pages (1 sheet) into the first issue of American Analog.

… ahem… but seriously, I’ve gotten the quotes from printers, I’ve been shipping items for years, and I’ve done my best to price these items (booklets, packaging, shipping, and extra) confidently. Best case, I can sneak in some extra items into each order because everything goes so smoothly… Worst case, everything gets printed and shipped as normal.

American Analog is a collection of my favorite black and white photos in a classic zine format. Each issue will be 28 pages, full bleed print, on a 8.5″ X 5″ booklet. I’ve already completed the layout for the first issue, which is a collection of San Francisco street photography of San Francisco, and with your help will get it to the printers and into your hands… because as great as Flickr is, nothing beats holding a fresh photo book IRL.

Analog. I’m honestly still new to photography in general. Like many of you, I first started shooting photos with my mobile phone a couple years ago… but I got way into it. I started producing mobile photography how-to videos, organizing instawalks, and was even fortunate enough to have my work featured in The New York Times and Wired magazine.I bought my first non-iPhone camera, a Ricoh TF-500, a year ago at a yard sale for $5. I threw in a roll of Lomography’s Color Negative 400 ISO and loved the results. I’ve continued shooting film and mobile for the last year, but while my iPhone shots have been getting posted up to the Instagrams, I’ve been slowly collecting my analog street photography for this zine project. I’m so excited to finally get this thing printed!
