Relationship Portraits: Capture Emotion in Black & White Photography

The Art of Black & White Portrait Photography: Techniques from a Master Photographer Paperback – November 1, 2002

This item: Portrait Mastery in Black & White: Learn the Signature Style of a Legendary Photographer

Tim Kelly is a Master Photographer whose portrait work has inspired people in the portrait photography industry since the 1980s. His work has a classic, polished quality that beautifully depicts the personality of each subject, with no gimmicks.

His style is reliant on careful camera technique, flawless lighting, and an uncanny ability to coax the most flattering-possible pose from every man, woman, and child who steps in front of his camera.

In this book, Tim Kelly presents 60 of his most impressive and diverse black & white portrait images of men, women, children, and groups. For each of the sixty images, readers will get a deconstructive look at every aspect of building the image, from the ground up.

Kelly will discuss the creative concept behind his images and share the gear, exposure, lighting, and posing strategies he learned to create gorgeous black & white portraiture with an exquisite tonal range, beautiful, form-flattering highlights and shadows, and both refined and comfortable poses that invite the viewer to study the image frame.

This book contains all of the information you need to create standout black & white portraiture–from conceptualization, to posing and lighting, to postproduction and printing options.

A collection of birds to color from all over the world brings nature into your home, and nourishes your soul with beautiful and magical creatures.

Based on all of the positive reviews, I was really looking forward to this book. After reading the book, I have to agree with Mr. Karidian’s review. In my opinion, the photographs are harshly lit and most of the poses are forced.

There is little nuance and variation in his work. I find the photographs of the homeless people especially offensive and exploitative. The photographs of the actor portraying the devil are embarrassingly bad – apparently no attempt was made to hide the adhesive used used to attach the Halloween horns to his forehead.

I feel that the technical description of the lighting is basic at best. Most of the photos use essentially the same combination of lights, resulting in little variation in each of the photographs. The lighting of some of the group photos is especially bad.

Several faces in the group shots are not lit at all, or are in the shadow of the adjacent model. Mr. Lozoya mentions that shooting group photos can be challenging. His group shots support that statement.

As much as I appreciate Mr. Lozoya’s candor and willingness to share his technique, I feel that his work is far from what I would consider masterful. He mentions Karsh as one photographer he admires. Compare his work to Karsh’s, or any of the other photographers he lists as having influenced his work.

There is little to compare.

This book by a significant photo artist, is much more than a how-to book. It fills an important niche in any photo library.

Tim Kelly provides you with the information and techniques to create black and white portraits that will set you apart. You will learn the process to create art rather than simple snapshots. In this book, he provides you with 60 lighting setups, the ideas behind them, and samples of the results.

If you are looking to take your portraiture to the next level, then this book will be a great help in accomplishing that.

If you have ever thought of doing black and white portrait photography, read this book. And if you are already doing black and white portrait photography, read this book. Why is this book so good? The photographs are superb.

They were clearly the result from a master photographer’s camera. I’d love to have one of his images in my collection. But perhaps more important to the potential reader is the technical expertise provided in the book.

Each of the many photographs is accompanied by a lighting diagram. And, the text explains why each lighting arrangement was used. In addition, the author discusses his approach to each subject(s). One has a strong feel for the rapport necessary between photographer and client that is necessary to achieve this level of quality.

This is definitely a book for every photographer’s library.Charles Heisterkamp, III, M.D.,Photographer

The images in this book are breathtaking and beautiful. The variety of subjects from classic portraiture to publicity and folklore is impressive. I very much enjoy learning about different cultures and found this book to whet my appetite for the Mexican/American traditions.

The text next to each image helped to explain individual photographs as well as why Oscar Lozoya started creating series of works. The homeless series made me look and see that he views the homeless as individuals with their own personalities that show through in the portraits he presents in this book.

Having seen original prints at an exhibit I must say that a good deal of tonalities were lost in the reproduction in the book. (As is to be expected when a photograph is copied for mass reproduction.) Mr.

Lozoya’s mastery of studio lighting in stunning in it’s technical precision. As a photographer the lighting diagrams helped considerably to visualize the arrangement and placement of the strobe lights.

There is also a good deal of information on how he contacts models and how the concept of each image took shape. The photographs in this book are sometimes classic portraits and there are also images that are strikingly different from the normal and challenge you to think.

All of the photos are hard to forget. This book helped to inspire me creatively and challenge the way I see photography as an art form. I would highly recommend it for anyone studying photography or wanting a creative jolt.

If you’re into studio photography (and even if you don’t plan to do black & White photos) this book is for you.Read more

“The Other Woman” by Sandie Jones “The Other Woman is an absorbing thriller with a great twist. A perfect beach read.” ― Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author of “The Great Alone” Pre-order today

There seems to be good information but the author has not related his text with the photographs and drawings, in some cases just total confusion. He would speak of a photo and then have one or two photos or drawings presented prior to the referenced drawing or photo as well as two to three pages of text.

The focus of the book based on the cover is, Black and White Portraiture but there were numerous color portraits. I was not overly impressed with many of the photos and the judgmental approach to the descriptions.

I feel cheated.

Mr. Lozoya’s portraits can only be described as vulgar. The lighting is harsh and contrasty giving his portraits an “apparent” dramatic quality. His ability to “capture” the character of his subjects has less to do with Mr.

Lozoya’s ability to capture personality or “character” and more to do with taking advantage of his subjects — the battered faces of the homeless, blind, handicapped, legless, toothless people. Otherwise Mr.

Lozoya resorts to cheap theatrics of make-up, masks, horns, ridiculous dramatic poses, props and even fake blood. For the publisher to publish Mr. Lozoya under it’s “Masters Series” is deceiving and insults the true masters.
