Printing isn’t one of ID’s strong points. Do you have the Send Data field under Graphics in the print options set to “All”?

BUT, artwork and greyscale photos that print just fine straight from Photoshop CC, print out either a muddy brown or in a sepia tone when they are placed in and printed from InDesign. This card isn’t going to be sent to a printer; I hope to print a dozen copies or so here at home.

.

I appreciate your response and will try the PDF route. It’s just so frustrating sometimes because I’m trying to do what I think of as a simple and straightforward task–all I want to do is print what black/grey on the screen and have it actually print out on paper as black/grey. One thing that I forgot to mention–when I print the card to the Canon PRO-100 and set the paper type in the printer driver to “plain,” the grayscale image prints just fine but the colours are ‘off’ in the other images. Thank you again for your kind suggestion; I’ll let you know what happens.

I just need to know why something that prints fine from Photoshop doesn’t print correctly when being printed from InDesign.

Did you ever figure anything out? We are having a similar problem which an inDesign file full of photos that has been passed to me.

What happens if you convert the grayscales and InDesign native colors to RGB?

It sounds like your print driver correctly converts RGB objects into the print space but has a problem with CMYK (ID doesn’t have a grayscale space so for output grayscales are on the CMYK black channel)

I’m a fairly knowledgeable amateur photographer working on a Yahrzeit card. My CS colour settings are all synced and colour photos and ID layouts print just fine to my Canon PRO-100 and several other desktop inkjet printers from my Windows 7/8 machines. Monitors are pretty carefully calibrated.  BUT, artwork and greyscale photos that print just fine straight from Photoshop CC, print out either a muddy brown or in a sepia tone when they are placed in and printed from InDesign. Now, I’ve set the Transparency Blend to RGB, and that didn’t help. This card isn’t going to be sent to a printer; I hope to print a dozen copies or so here at home. I don’t need a discusssion of Black vs True Black, CMYK, Windows’ inherent weakness in dealing with colour management. I just need to know why something that prints fine from Photoshop doesn’t print correctly when being printed from InDesign.

Also if you don’t want to convert your grayscales and they don’t have transparency, you could try making an RGB black swatch in ID, and color the grayscale with that swatch:

Have you tried exporting a PDF from ID and printing through Acrobat?

Thank you for your quick response to my query. I followed your advice, converted the greyscale images to RGB, and now the document prints as it should ! So, thank you very much ! One question, though : what are InDesign native colours ?

Forgot to mention that, yes, I had the Send Data field set to “all.” The solution to my problem was to convert the greyscale images to RGB in Photoshop. That seemed to work and now the card prints out beautifully. Thank you again for your response.

Based up in the Noosa Hinterland, Jon Schultz takes inspiration from his surroundings to create vibrant abstract art. Jon started creating art reproductions from his large scale originals just last year to allow his work to be more accessible to a wider audience and he hasn’t looked back – he now sells his prints to customers worldwide!

I think the problem with printing to a composite color printer from InDesign can be the print driver’s conversion of CMYK color into the printer’s color space—I’m guessing if you try to print a CMYK file out of Photoshop you won’t be happy with the color there either. Because InDesign doesn’t have a grayscale space it puts the grayscale on the CMYK black plate, so if you want to compare PS and ID printing you would have to copy the grayscale to the black channel of a Photoshop file leaving CMY empty.

Thank you very much for any helpful advice that you might be able to provide !
