Black And White Prints Snapfish.

Shoot RAW + JPEG. The best monochrome conversions are gained by editing raw files which have the full colour information, but if you shoot raw and JPEG files simultaneously and set the camera to its monochrome photograph Style/Picture Control/Film Simulation mode you get an indication of how the image will look in black and white. As many photographers struggle to visualise a scene in black and white, these monochrome modes are an invaluable tool that will help with composition and scene assessment. most cameras are also capable of producing decent in-camera monochrome images these days and it’s worth experimenting with image parameters (usually contrast, sharpness, filter effects and toning) to find a look that you like. Because compact modus operandi cameras and compact cameras show the scene seen by the sensor with camera settings applied, users of these cameras are able to preview the monochrome image in the electronic viewfinder or on rear screen before taking the shot. DSLR users can also do this if they kick in their camera’s live impression road , but the usually slower responses mean that many will find it preferable or check the image on the screen post-capture.

Take Control. Although coloured filters could still be used to manipulate contrast when shooting digital black and white images, it’s more common to save this work until the processing stage. Until a a couple years ago Photoshop’s Channel Mixer was the favorite means of turning colour images monochrome, but now Adobe Camera Raw has more forceful tools (in the HSL/Grayscale tab) that allow you to adjust the brightness of eight individual colours that make up the image. It’s possible to adjust one of these colours to make it anything from white to black with the sliding control. However, it’s important to keep an eye on the whole image when adjusting a particular colour as crafty gradations may become unnatural looking. And adjusting the brightness of a red or pink shirt with the red sliding control, for instance , will have an impact on the model’s skin, especially the lips. The Levels and Curves controls can also be used to manipulate tonal range and contrast, but the HSL/Grayscale controls allow you to create segregation between objects of the same brightness but with diverse colours.

Dodge and Burn. Dodging and burning is a custom that comes from the traditional darkroom and is usually used to burn in or darken highlights and hold back (brighten) shadows. Photoshop’s Dodge and Burn tools allow a level of control that film photographers should only thought of taking a degree of because you can target the highlights, shadows or mid-tones with both. This means that you could use the Burn tool to darken highlights when they are too bright, or the Dodge tool to perk up them to increase local contrast. It’s a great avenue of giving a sense of superior sharpness and enhancing texture. Plus, because you should set the opacity of the tools, you should build up their effect gradually so the impact is crafty and there are no hard edges.

Try Long Exposure. Long exposure shots could work really well in monochrome photography, especially where there’s moving water or clouds. During the exposure the highlights of the water, for example, are recorded across a wider place than they would with a short exposure and this can help enhance tonal contrast. The blurring of the movement also adds textural contrast with any solid objects in the frame. If compulsory , use a neutral density filter such as Lee Filters’ Big Stopper or Little Stopper to reduce exposure and extend shutter speed (by 10 and 4 stops respectively). characteristically , when exposures extend farther than about 1/60 sec a tripod is required to keep the camera still and avoid blurring. It’s also advisable to use a remote release and mirror lock-up to minimise vibration and produce super-sharp images.

Use Filters. Graduated neutral density (AKA ND grad) and polarizing filters are merely as advantageous in monochrome photography as they are in colour. In fact, because they manipulate image contrast they are arguably more useful . An ND grad is supportive when you require to retain detail in a bright sky while a polarizing filter could be used to decrease reflections and boost contrast. Alternatively, count taking two or more shots with unique exposures to create a high dynamic range (HDR) composite. Don’t be afraid to use a ND grad with a standard neural density filter if the sky is brighter than the foreground in a long exposure shot. Coloured filters, which are an essential tool for monochrome film photographers, could also be useful for manipulating contrast in digital images. They work by darkening objects of their opposite colour while lightening objects of their own. An orange filter, for example, will darken the blue of the sky while a green single will lighten foliage.

Look for Contrast, Shape and Texture. The complimentary and opposing colours that bring a colour image to life are all reduced to black and white or shades of grey in a monochrome image and you have to look for tonal contrast to make a shot stand out. In colour photography, for example, your eye would instantly be drawn to a red object on a green background, but in monochrome photography these two areas are likely to have the same brightness, so the image looks flat and featureless straight from the camera. happily , it’s possible to work adjust the brightness of these two colours singly to introduce some contrast. However, a great starting point is to look for scenes with tonal contrast. There are always exceptions, but as a general rule look for scenes that contain some strong blacks and whites. This should be achieved by the light or by the brightness (or tone) of the objects in the scene as well as the exposure settings that you use. The brightness of the bark of a silver birch tree for example, can inject some contrast (and interest) in to a woodland scene. Setting the exposure for these brighter areas also makes the shadows darker, so the highlights stand out even more. Look for shapes, patterns and textures in a scene and move around to find the most excellent composition.

Like Shutterfly, Snapfish has been around since the birth of the online photo printing industry. Snapfish likely has a few billion fewer files on its servers, since customers are required to order at least one photo per year to earn their piece of the storage pie, but it has also offered consistently lower prices than Shutterfly from the start.

Shutterfly has been around since the birth of the online photo printing business with the goal of disrupting the traditional way we once printed photos, and it’s succeeded so far. According to Bloomberg, it’s had to compete against more than a thousand startups in addition to brick and mortar retail shops. If the mere fact this site has survived the competition doesn’t say enough, consider the fact that it now guards more than 16 billion treasured moments on their servers. (The company claims it has never deleted a photo.)

Purchasing a pre-paid print plan for 4-by-6 photos lowers Shutterfly’s per item prices enough to nearly meet Snapfish at rock bottom. Buying a 400 or 600 print plan won’t break your budget ($44 and $54, respectively) and knowing you need to use your credit within 2 years may help you keep your goal to fill your photo albums with new memories or enable you to buy copies of the best ones for friends and family. If 4-by-6 prints aren’t your standard choice, you could opt for an annual subscription ($29), which gets you 30% off all orders and a free 8.5-by-11 photo book.

Once we receive your order, it takes us a few days to make it just right for you. Because every order is custom, it can take up to 3 business days to process your order. Next, we send orders out for shipping. It can take up to 7 days after processing to receive your order, depending on the shipping method you select. Snapfish offers four convenient ways to ship your order: standard, ground, 2-day, and overnight. Details on these options can be found here.

Who It Works Best ForAnyone who wants the widest array of print surface options available, combined with reasonable prices, will enjoy Shutterfly.

Lifehacker readers rated Snapfish #1, in agreement with the author’s sentiments that it was the “most generous” photo printing site. PC Magazine called Snapfish’s prices good, implying that you may sacrifice a bit of quality in exchange for the discount. However, when you look at reviews like the one on, you can see that Snapfish is a strong contender for #1 and prints for less than half the cost of the winner.

If you want to go big, really big, check out this New York Times article about full wall options and companies that can create wallpaper and vinyl murals from your photos.

For many people, cost is the most important factor when deciding whether to print photos or let them linger in cyberspace indefinitely. Capturing and preserving memories can be addictive, which can be a good thing, as long as you can afford it. Printing your own photos at home might be less expensive at times, but the quality isn’t always great and even the most tech savvy of us get printer jams. Another reason to use an online photo site: There’s a whole world out there of collage books, personalized postage stamps, and even magnets, at least with the sites that have the most variety of options. Once you start uploading prints and thinking of the possibilities, you may never want a mundane, single image, 4-by-6 ever again.

Note: Currently you cannot edit more than one photo at a time and there is no option when ordering prints to convert the photos to black and white.

Finally, before you choose an online printer for your most precious memories, you’ll want to be sure they’re known for producing beautiful products in a timely fashion. If the print quality is inconsistent or the uploading process cumbersome, the bargain price you received won’t feel so special.

Its DownsidesWhen you’re in the market for standard 4-by-6 prints, the cost of your MPIX order can add up quickly. Furthermore, the site doesn’t prompt you to click the “edit crop” feature (which allows you to choose exactly what part of your image will end up on paper).

Who It Works Best ForAnyone shopping for a large wall print should compare pricing at MPIX. Those who want professional quality, 4-by-6 prints at reasonable prices will be pleased with the visible difference in print quality.

Why We Like ItMPIX uses higher quality paper than its competitors and takes the time to individually color correct every photo. Its color prints shine with a Lustre finish, and its black and white prints have the depth only dedicated black and white paper can provide. Furthermore, once you step up the print size ladder, MPIX’s prices begin to rub shoulders with the competition.

Before you entrust any website with your precious memories, you want to be sure they can do them justice without breaking the bank. What do people say about their print quality? How many prints do you need to order to get a good deal? Do they have a mobile app? Can you share photos from your account within their site? To help you answer these questions and more, CreditDonkey has reviewed the top 3 places to print photos — Shutterfly, Snapfish, and MPIX— to see how they stack up against each other.

Although Shutterfly now offers customers the ability to print on almost any surface imaginable, The New York Times felt it was “best suited to book creators and mug decorators.” Perhaps Shutterfly at least halfway agrees with them — TechCrunch reported the company recently purchased Shark Tank backed GrooveBook to expand its foothold in the photo book niche. It’s likely the average consumer will be content to know that when The Wall Street Journal reviewed photo book printers, the writer’s Shutterfly purchase arrived first and cost the least.

Click MY PHOTOS at the top of the page, and open the album that contains the photos you want to edit.  Hover your mouse over the photo you want to edit, and click the gear icon that appears.  A menu like shown on the right appears.

Click Edit Photo.  Your photo appears on the left with an editing menu on the right (shown below). Click FILTERS at the top.   When the FILTERS menu opens (see below), click B & W in the top row, and you will see the photo turn to Black and White.

Click DONE EDITING to save the change to a new copy of the photo. The new black and white version will appear alongside your original colour version in your album.

Snapfish has been printing photos for almost 20 years, and our parent company for more than 45 years! From prints, books, cards, and gifts to canvas prints, wall décor, and mugs, we offer a wider selection than you’ll find anywhere else. Shop our entire collection here.

We’re all taking more photos than ever. But what are we doing with them? Are they forever stuck in our phones or in the cloud somewhere? Photo sites make it easy to pull out your favorite images and turn them into printable keepsakes and gifts. The only hard part is deciding which one to use.

Its DownsidesYou won’t find glowing reviews (nor raging rants) about Shutterfly written by professional photographers. The company’s print quality is in line with its major competitors but also correlates with its moderate to low prices.

Its DownsidesSome reviewers reported that items they received were printed askew and had to be redone (i.e., greeting cards and photo books). Others stated that prints retrieved at their local printers differed in quality from those ordered by mail.

Prices: Moderate to high base prices ($0.29 for 4-by-6 prints, $7.49 for 11-by-14 prints, or $25 and up for a 7.75-by-10 photo book), little or no discounts, 3/5Selection: Photo books, cards, stationary, prints (including canvas wall art), and more, 3/5Reputation: Premium quality prints, high quality photo paper, 5/5CreditDonkey Score: 3.7/5
